Belly Fat Linked to Brain Shrinkage and Dementia

If you wanted more reasons to try to avoid excess bodyweight, and in particular excess belly fat, then this study might be one you pay close attention to. Excess belly fat has been linked to a shrinking brain with age, and thus risk developing dementia later on in life. The main form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease and affects a persons memory, thinking, and judgement. Thus trying to keep unnecessary weight off is not only good for your physical outer appearance but also for keeping your brain functioning properly as you age. Although this seems strange how belly fat affects brain health, it is not all that surprising since we must take a holistic approach to health and realize that our physical body and brain functions are interlinked together. Thus when we take care of our body, our brain follows suit; and likewise if we abuse our body's health, our brain takes some damage too.
